Wonky Boats Initiative

Giving fully functional boats to clubs, youth groups, grassroots organisations and other deserving groups across the UK.
What is The Wonky Boats Initiative?
At The Boathouse, we believe every boat deserves a chance to get on the water — even the slightly wonky ones.
Not every boat we build makes it to retail. A scratch here, a dent there. Nothing that affects performance, but not quite up to our usual-high standards. Rather than recycling them, we give them purpose. Through the Wonky Boats Initiative, we donate these boats to paddling clubs, youth programmes, and grassroots groups who will put them to good use.
"This isn't about clearing shelves. It's about giving back."
What Makes a Wonky Boat?
Every boat of ours goes through rigorous quality control. Wonky boats are those that do not meet our high retail cosmetic standards but remain perfectly safe and water ready.
Minor Cosmetic Marks
Small imperfections to finish, colour consistency, or appearance that don't affect performance.
Fully Functional
Structurally sound, water-ready, and built to our high standards for performance, durability and safety.
Donated
Given to community organisations to increase access to paddling. This is a non-profit community initiative facilitated by The Boathouse, in collaboration with Silverbirch Canoes, Hou Canoes and Tootega.
How it Works
The application process is straightforward. Here's what to expect:
You Apply
Tell us about your organisation, who you support, and how a wonky boat would make a difference.
We Review
Each application will be thoroughly reviewed to understand your impact, your community and how a wonky boat would make a meaningful difference.
We Match
When suitable wonky boats become available, we match them with selected organisations.
We Get In Touch
Selected organisations are contacted directly to arrange delivery or collection.
Please Note: Availability depends on when suitable wonky boats become available — Ranging from Tootega, Silverbirch and Hou Canoes.
We run periodic selection rounds as boats are ready.

Frequently Asked Questions
Any UK-based club, school, charity or grassroots paddling group. You don’t need to be big – just active and doing good work. The initiative is focused on community organisations, clubs, and groups rather than private individuals. We're looking to maximise community impact by supporting organisations that serve multiple people. That being said, individuals can apply for themselves if they believe they have good reason to.
We will contact you by email or phone. This is a donation scheme and therefore there will be no need to gain any personal info like your card details. Please be safe and aware of possible scams.
No – the boat is a donation. If delivery is tricky, we might ask for help covering shipping (we'll chat if that comes up).
You can let us know your preferences in your application, but availability depends on which boats become wonky. We'll do our best to match boats to organisational needs, but we can't guarantee specific models.
Yes. If you're not selected first time around, you're welcome to apply again when future boats become available.
You're still welcome to apply! We love projects that help underrepresented adults, individuals with disabilities, mental health initiatives, rural access schemes and any other type of group with a great mission!
It varies, but we're starting with a small batch. This helps us keep the process personal.
Each one has a story. Cosmetic imperfections, old demo stock, or something that didn’t pass our final QC. Structurally sound. Fully usable. Maybe even a bit of character.
